A new dawn of gaming is upon us. As we approach a new and brutal console war where the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to compete for ultimate video game dominance, it is important to remember the long and storied history that led us to these peaks we take for granted today. Yes, I am referring to the tragic tale of Sega and their once great console the Sega Mega Drive, or as you may know it, Genesis.
Before we launch into perhaps the most brutal conflict in gaming history, we should look back at the dawn of gaming. Long before Sony and Microsoft were kings of the industry, companies like Atari and Sega were huge names that lined up arcades with quality games. This boom led to a huge array of home consoles designed to be more convenient than the arcades. Of course this boom led to a brutal crash that very nearly destroyed the industry.
Once Sega, Nintendo and a few others dusted themselves off, the home console wars began to get serious. This led to what may be the most brutal period in gaming history, the 16-Bit war. This saw Sega forced to contend with the Super Nintendo and Super Mario. They countered with one of the greatest rivalries in gaming history that led to the success of the Sega Genesis that is still beloved today.
So let us walk together through the highs and lows of Sega’s tragic past and their one truly great console, the Genesis!
