The ship, named Mars after the Roman god of war, sank in a battle in 1564. Instead of raising Mars to the surface to study, which would damage the ship and artifacts, high-resolution photos and scans were made of the vessel and its surrounding resting place. Archaeologists hope to use these scans to better understand the ship as well as the battle that ultimately resulted in its sinking.
