In September 2014, 43 students disappeared in Guerrero Province, Mexico.
Eye witnesses say that the students – who were on their way to a peaceful left-wing demonstration – were taken into custody after a violent police operation that reportedly left 6 people shot dead and 20 injured.
This is an unusual and deeper look at the social context of where those students came from: the Monster in the Mountains is the violence bred from poverty and corruption that comes down and stalks the land.
US photo-journalist Matt Black spent several weeks in the region where the poor feel they are at war with the state, and with little or no chance of winning.
