Best known for his nearly five decades as an integral part of the rock band The Grateful Dead, Grammy award winning percussionist Mickey Hart invites us into his home studio to take us on a rhythmic journey that combines his love of music, science, and the visual arts.
With the help of Dr. Adam Gazzaley and UCSF, Hart is unlocking the rhythmic potential of the mind by translating his own brain’s electrical impulses read from an EEG cap into audible frequencies, and then jamming with them.
“It all comes down to vibration and rhythm,” Hart says of his collaboration with Dr. Gazzaley. “These sounds are noise— harsh, strange—and it is only after dancing with their essence face to face that music can be created.”
