In 2001, Red Bull Rampage arrived. It transformed and legitimized the world of freeride mountain biking. The pioneers of the sport took the freeriding style they developed — in areas like Canada’s west coast — to the mountains outside Virgin, Utah, and competed for the first time on a raw, undeveloped, steep section of desert without trails or infrastructure.
Year 1 was about survival. “Can we ride it?” was a questions that took the world’s best riders to the absolute limit of the sport, hucking cliffs and pioneering new lines that would change the sport of mountain biking forever.
