In the many, many decades before cell phones, a tiny, pocket-sized computer you could play games on, call or message anyone in the world instantly, and use for any number of convenient functions from calculation to schedule management to shopping and much more was the stuff of science fiction. Then, technology advanced, and fantasy once again became reality. In the world of video games, much of what was only dreamed is now possible.
Stuff like virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, real-time upscaling, and computer-generated graphics have radically shaped and influenced gaming, and all of this simply wasn’t possible even half a century ago. Today, we’re going to take a look at this technology and examine how far we’ve come from the popular imaginings of it we all know and love.
We aren’t going to explain artificial intelligence or how machine learning works or anything of the kind, but we’re going to do a high level examination of how much of what was imagined is actually possible or will be soon. In some aspects, we’ve firmly brought into existence what we only dreamed of before, but in others, we still have a long way to go before it becomes actually possible.
