Sony’s prodigal console, the PlayStation 5, has dropped into our lives but hasn’t really gotten going yet. Sure you can play a few games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon Souls but neither of those are enough to justify that price just yet. Time will tell if the PS5 will live up to the vast legacy Sony has created over the decades. The PlayStation name holds quite a lot of prestige. Consoles like the PlayStation, PlayStation 4 and especially the PlayStation 2 have all made lasting impressions on the gaming industry. Then there’s the PlayStation 3 that…eventually got there!
The reasons why the PlayStation brand is so amazing are legion. There’s the obvious reason that most of the consoles have moved over 100 million units in their lifespan, which is quite the success. I mean, it’s not as impressive as all of the consoles hitting 100 mill, but again, PlayStation 3 had a rough launch. That level of success is a massive benchmark for the PS5 to live up to.
There are also plenty of missteps and bits of trivia you may not know about one of gaming’s greatest brands. The console has had multiple mascots, redesigns, failed technological innovations, cunning design choices and a tragic almost-deal with Nintendo that is considered one of the worst mistakes in gaming history. We’ll cover everything from the highs of Crash Bandicoot to the lows of Lair.
So let’s dive right into Sony’s incredible history with the PlayStation.
