July 20, 2017 – Male elephant seals assert their dominance not only through physical size, but also by using their voices. Their vocalizations are like fingerprints—completely unique to each individual. Less dominant males recognize the calls of more dominant rivals and steer clear. This ability to remember and recognize individual calls for social decision-making is unusual outside of humans. The calls contain music-like elements, including timbre and rhythm. Scientists say that research into this behavior may shed light on the origins of music.
