Watch: Massive Gas Leak in California Revealed in Infrared Footage | National Geographic

Infrared footage captured by Earthworks shows the release of methane gas from a leak at the Aliso Canyon Underground Storage Field in Los Angeles County. First detected on October 23, 2015, the leak has spewed more than 4.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas into the atmosphere. Southern California Gas Company, which owns the storage facility, doesn’t expect crews to be able to stop the leak before February. In the meantime, thousands of area residents have been relocated to temporary housing. The cause of the leak is under investigation. Aliso Canyon is the largest methane storage facility on the West Coast, but there are 333 similar natural gas storage locations across the U.S.
