Movies are great fun, aren’t they? You get to relax in a comfy chair, escape reality for a couple hours, and lose yourself in an amazing world filled with wonder and enchantment. Or at least that’s what you thought when you purchased that ticket for Amazing Spider-Man 2. If only you had a time-traveling DeLorean that you could use to go back in time and warn yourself that it would turn out just like Fantastic 4, Green Lantern, and Star Trek Nemesis. But alas, you continue to buy tickets for movies like Batman and Robin, Spider-Man 3, and Superman 4: Quest for Peace because you know Marvel and DC based movies would never let you down. But they can, and they do.
A franchise isn’t an easy thing to establish. You have to make the perfect casting choices like Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool, Tom Holland to play Spider-Man, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and so on. You have to write a good script that a solid director can get behind. But the most important thing is to focus on making a solid movie, and setup the sequels later. A lot of filmmakers tend to forget that, and therefore disintegrate any chance they had at a successful franchise. Movies like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are made simply to sell tickets to a third movie, and they suffer for it.Without the proper care and attention they need, movies can kill a franchise before it even begins.
